An Evening With Mario Batali - August 14, 2010. The Traverse City National Writers Series hosts Food Network star and award-winning chef Mario Batali on the Historic Front Lawn of the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Batali, the zealous and stylish star of Food Network programs including Molto Mario and Ciao America, has become one of the most recognizable chefs in America. With a restaurant empire, several cookbooks, a line of food products, and ubiquitous appearances on television and in print, it is hard to discuss current culinary trends in the U.S. without citing the name of Mario Batali. Guest host Paul Saginaw, co-owner and founding partner of Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, Michigan interviews Batali on stage at the event and facilitates the audience Q&A. Called “the coolest small company in America” by Inc. magazine, Zingerman’s expanded from a single deli started by Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig in 1982 to a multi-business conglomerate centered on a unique operational model of strong commitment to community, great food and service, and a passion for entrepreneurship and people.

In an embargo-busting move, we have brought four Cuban filmmakers from Havana to the Caribbean-blue waters of northern Michigan. Can we do that? Is it legal? Are they bringing us all cigars? Cuba has been our sworn enemy for the past 50 years, yet they simply love our three biggest contributions to the planet: baseball, jazz and Hollywood. On this panel we will hear for the first time what it’s like to make a movie in a country that is poor and cut off from much of the world. This will no doubt be an explosive panel, one that will be talked about long after the festival is over.

This program contains a short court hearing and an interview with Benzie County's sheriff.
Marijuana possession charges filed against a long-time Benzie County commissioner were dismissed on Monday, August 30, as part of a plea bargain. Mary Pitcher pleaded guilty to having an open container of beer in her vehicle when it was pulled over in June. She was sentenced to pay a minimal fine.
Prosecutors also dropped a charge that alleged Pitcher knowingly allowed an unlicensed person to drive her vehicle.
Pitcher claims that she wasn’t aware that there was marijuana in her car and she had no idea that the person driving her vehicle had a suspended license.
After her sentencing hearing, Benzie County Sheriff Rory Heckman became visibly upset with what he described as the special treatment that Commissioner Pitcher received.
He says that his officer saw Pitcher attempt to conceal the marijuana during the stop and they also had witnesses come forward who alleged she absolutely knew the driver didn’t have a license.
Pitcher doesn’t dispute that she handled the marijuana, but says the police report contained inaccurate statements regarding any attempt by her to hide it from the officer. At the time of her arrest, Pitcher was running unopposed in this November's general election. Shortly after she was charged, two candidates filed to run against her as independents.

Bob Russell joins Dave Barrons for this week's show, and the week of August 30th. Outside In will be devoting the entire half hour to the subject, Investigating Community Resilience. Bob and Dave begin outlining and framing the key components of resilience thinking and the key themes Outside In will bring into discussion. Resilience is natural and the concept comes to us from the study of natural systems that show resilience, or don't. Our future will be very different from our past as we move into and economic era of declining resources. As disruptions and shocks become more likely, communities with the tools of resilience in place, will likely adapt better and continue to function better. Outside In is about investigating resilience, not providing the answers but looking into the question, "What's makes for true community resilience and how do we work to build it"?
